Getting Involved
The University of Waterloo Sustainability Project (UWSP) is a multi-disciplinary, multi-opportunity FEDS service. If you are interested in the environment and have a project or research idea, or if you simply want to volunteer, then UWSP is for you!
UWSP is very dynamic and is very flexible to your interests, time commitments and course requirements. The list of positions we have created are very flexible and if your project is not on the list, and you are interested in starting one, we can help provide the resources, support and network to make it happen. With some help from us, you can work with other students from other faculties and work with professors who share your interests, all of which will bring an interesting perspective, level of expertise and guidance into your project. If you see an opportunity for progressive, environmental change on campus, or you think your course can be linked to help improve the campus environment, UWSP is here to help you make a difference.
How to Volunteer
- The best way to hear about volunteer opportunities within UWSP and in the Waterloo Region is to subscribe to our mailing list.
- Come to a General Meeting! UWSP holds general meetings at the beginning of every term after Clubs and Services Day for the purpose of introducing UWSP to the student body. These meetings present UWSP's goals and projects and allow us to meet interested people on campus.
- Apply for a Directorship! These executive roles have greater responsibility than general volunteers. You have the opportunity to lead other students towards accomplishing common goals with a Working Group or Special Committee! If you have other interests, such as in Volunteer Recruitment or Financing, this is the position for you!
- Join a working group! UWSP divides projects categorically into working groups. These working groups have several thematic projects running over several terms.
- Start your own working group! Projects do not have to stem from existing working groups. New working groups can always be created. If you are interested in developing a project or a working group, contact us at uwsp@feds.ca.
- Come out to or volunteer at one of our events!
- E-mail us at uwsp@feds.ca. Let us know what you're interested in, ideas you have and what you'd like to accomplish. We will gladly meet with you and work with you on projects and ideas.
Class Opportunities
Many classes at UW provide the opportunity to research and develop a project. In some cases, implementation is also part of the class. In the past, students have contacted UWSP about a project and have worked with UWSP to develop a very relevant research project. UWSP also provides the opportunity to implement your project after the research and the course is over. Talk to your professor for ideas and permission, and come to UWSP to get started.
