Sustainable Foods
Indeed, we eat more than once everyday and our choice of diet can be harmful to the environment. Sustainable Foods is a young and fresh working group. Our goal is shared with UWSP and fellow working groups to direct UW towards sustainability – we aim to educate students on healthy eating, ethical purchasing, and sustainable options for our diet. "Sustainable" food means different things to each of us, as we seek to balance emerging food issues about various health, environmental and social concerns.
“There are now over a billion people in the world who go hungry - about the same number who are overweight The WHO calls this "the double burden" and they are both linked through inequality.”
Sustainable food encouarges debates and dilemmas such as food miles or local, organic v GM, ethical & fair trade, land & labour, climate change & carbon labelling, cheap v quality (assured), health & environment, biodiversity v monoculture, veggie & animal welfare?
Ultimately, Sustainable Foods' goal is not moral perfection but rather respect and responsibility for the Earth, to the greatest extent that these precepts can be followed daily. Together we can look towards developing a healthy relationship with our food and the Earth.
We are currently putting together a Sustainable Food Directory for alternative, green stores in KW in order to enforce responsible decision-making.
