Solar Panel on Fed Hall
In January 2004, STEP installed the first ever student designed solar array in
Canada. The array consists of 36 55–watt panels for a total power of
1950 watts, purchased from Arise Technology.
The array is expected to produce 1400 kWh a year—enough to power for
2/3 of an energy efficient home. STEP raised $40,000 from 22 generous
UW and business community sponsors to complete the project. For more information, please visit www.step.uwaterloo.ca.
Bottled-Water Free Zone
The Polaris Institute united with the Canadian Federation of Students
and the Sierra Youth Coalition in launching the campus bottled water
free zones campaign for World Water Day (WWD) March 22nd, 2008.
UWSP supports and encourages public drinking water. In 2008 we signed on as a bottled-water free zone, adhering to the following principles:
- Continuing to raise awareness of the impacts of the bottled water industry and consuming bottled water
- No official funds used to purchase bottled water
- Aiming to remove bottled water from vending machines
- Promoting or providing alternatives to bottled water
